253 UK Tenders Closing Within 7 Days — Councils Lead on Count, NHS on Value
Public tenders do not wait for a quiet week. In CouncilIQ’s latest 30-day active window (notices published in the last 30 days, still live, with a deadline), 253 opportunities were due to close within seven days.
That is closing pressure you can plan around — if you are watching the right signals. Below: the urgency ladder, who is buying (by count vs by value), and why SME suppliers should still favour accessible mid-band work over the £bn framework noise.
Closing pressure in the 30-day window
| Closing window | Count | Published value (where present) |
|---|---|---|
| Within 7 days | 253 | £106.5bn (mega-skewed) |
| Within 14 days | 539 | £120.7bn (mega-skewed) |
| Within 30 days | 1,094 | £124.9bn (mega-skewed) |
Read the value column carefully. Those sums are inflated by mega-framework ceilings (≥ £500m). In this same 30-day set there were 19 such megas. Closing-soon value is therefore a poor SME compass; closing-soon count is the operational signal.
For context on the full window: 1,302 active tenders with a live deadline published in the last 30 days; 1,061 had a published value and 241 did not. A further 1,128 active notices published in-window had a null deadline and are excluded from these closing counts.
Buyer mix: councils win on volume
Heuristic buckets on buyer name (NHS/Health → Councils → Education → Central gov/blue light → Other — not an official taxonomy) for the same 30-day active set:
| Buyer type | Count (n) | Total published value |
|---|---|---|
| Councils | 549 | £9.0bn |
| Other | 452 | £5.8bn |
| Education | 123 | £0.12bn |
| NHS/Health | 100 | £109.2bn |
| Central gov / blue light | 78 | £17.2bn |
Two stories in one table:
- Councils lead on opportunity count — 549 notices. If you sell into local government (works, services, tech, facilities, community delivery), this is where most tickets sit.
- NHS/Health leads on published value — not because there are more health notices, but because mega-framework ceilings (including a £105bn+ national collaborative hospitals framework) sit in that bucket and warp the sum.
Practical takeaway: choose your filter by goal. Hunting volume and local relationships → councils. Hunting framework lot strategy → health / central — knowing the headline value is a ceiling, not a purchase order.
Keep it accessible: mid-band and SME flags
Closing pressure is not only about seven-day megas. In the same 30-day window:
- 160 tenders sat in the accessible £5–75k band, summing to about £6.52 million
- 842 notices were flagged SME-suitable (9 false; 451 unknown/null)
Examples of soonest-closing notices (illustrative mix)
From the snapshot’s soonest-closing-with-value list (deadlines on the snapshot day), the mix was deliberately varied — small and large side by side:
- Cafe Concessionaire — Saltash Town Council — £20,000
- Contract for Valuation and Indexation of Assets — London Borough of Waltham Forest — £75,000
- Hisehope Groove Mine Conservation and Consolidation — Natural England — £8,333
- RFP for Thailand Tax Outsourcing — British Council — £48,000
- Alongside larger packages (e.g. traffic signs, precast units, site cleaning) from major contractors and agencies
How to use closing pressure without burning out
- Check the ≤7-day list daily (or subscribe to a digest) — 253 live closings in a month is enough volume that a weekly-only habit will miss fit work.
- Sort by your band, not by total value. Mega ceilings will always float to the top of a value sort.
- Prefer council volume when you are local. 549 council-tagged notices in this window is the density play for SMEs serving place-based buyers.
- Treat NHS/central value ranks as framework intelligence, not as a to-do list of £bn bids.
- Remember null deadlines exist. They do not appear in the closing-soon tables above; separate monitoring may be needed for open-ended or rolling notices.
Soft next steps
- Browse closing-soon and council-heavy lists on counciliq.co.uk / live tenders.
- Open Bid Buddy at counciliq.co.uk/bid-buddy when a short-deadline tender is a genuine fit — draft and score sections against that notice.
- Join the free newsletter for tenders digests if you want closing pressure summarised rather than living in the portal all day.
Figures from CouncilIQ’s tenders table only, snapshot generated 18 September 2026 (Europe/London). Closing-soon value totals are mega-framework skewed; prefer counts, mid-band (£5–75k), and SME flags for accessible narrative. Buyer-type buckets are keyword heuristics on buyer name.
